首相は「２４時間余り前に日本の首相として指名を受けたばかりだ」と英語のあいさつで演説を始め、その後は日本語に切り替えた。ところが、同時通訳の音声が流れなかった。

　約５分ほど進んだところで高須幸雄・国連大使が壇上に駆け寄り、機器の故障を耳打ちすると、首相はすかさず英語で、「メード・イン・ジャパンじゃないからこうなる」。会場は大きな笑いと拍手に包まれ、終了後には何人かの出席者が「いい演説だった」と首相を祝福した。
